Free Internet Access in Chania

The city of Chania has set up free Internet access via wireless broadband for residents and visitors across the city. As announced during a press conference, the Hania Dimos (Municipality) provide 5 free wireless broadband internet access points in the city, using the infrastructure of metropolitan fiber optic network developed in collaboration with the Technical University of Crete.

The points chosen are traditional places of high activity and visitors, and the network will soon be extended to other busy areas of the borough.

The connection is made through the metropolitan fiber network as part of “Kallikrates” and has already extended to other municipalities around Chania.

Vice Chancellor of the University, Yiannis Paterakis, said, "The infrastructure is done, the TUC and the city started the development and secured the funding in 2005."

Free wireless Internet access is also provided by the Municipality at the tourist office on the ground floor of the Muncipality hall (Dimarxeio) and at the municipal library.

Blue Flag Beaches in Crete 2010

421 Greek beaches and 9 marinas are awarded the European Union Blue Flag for 2010. Of these, 96 are in Crete(nearly one quarter of the total for Greece).
