A strange weather phenomenon which occurs in Crete is the 'red rain' or Sahara dust. This usually occurs in March or April when southerly winds bring sand from Africa to Crete... the sand remains in the upper atmosphere and gives a red or orange glow to the clouds, falling as red mud or sand with the rain. Today was one such day:
