Matala Open-Air 2011 - the Hippies Reunion

The myth of Matala is alive! A re-union for the hippies of the 60's and 70's, who lived in the caves at Matala, is taking place 11th to 13th June 2011.

"Matala Open Air" is a 3 day music festival with live music and beach parties, all taking place right in front of the famous caves, with music from the sixties and seventies - an attractive program with lots of live music and activities including a Hippie bazaar, acoustic live music, concerts, children's fun park and more.

70th Anniversary Battle of Crete, May 2011

This year's memorial events for the Battle of Crete are expected to be attended by many people from all over the world as 2011 marks the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Crete.

Battle of Crete 1941
On May 20th 1941 German paratroopers landed at Maleme airfield, in the first airborne invasion of its kind. The Allied forces fought back and the Germans suffered heavy casualties, but by May 22nd the Germans managed to occupy Maleme airfield then fly in support aircraft, troops and supplies... so began the German occupation of Crete, which lasted until 1944.


70th Anniversary Programme
The programme of memorial events for May 2011 has been finalised and will run between 15th and 22nd May 2011.

Update
The RAF Red Arrows will once again make an appearance in Crete to mark the anniversary with a flying display over Chania Harbour on Sunday 22 May 2011 at 11.30 a.m.
